Description: |
NS Westbound Vehicle Train 270 ( Birmingham to Lincoln, Al. Honda Plant ) passing through Riverside, Al. on their way back to BNSF's East Thomas Yard with an ultra rare pair of SD38Ps for power, Ive caught these before on transfers & yard jobs on BNSF, but is my 1st time ever seeing these SD38Ps on a road train, theyre not equipped with ditch lights, so the 270 had to run 30 MPH over each crossing with the headend only, once the headend gets through the crossing they can get back to track speed, but if theres many road crossings together may as well stay at 30 MPH |

Description: |
NS Westbound Vehicle Train 270 ( Birmingham to Lincoln, Al. Honda Plant ) smokes it up as they pass through Prescott, Al. on their way back to BNSFs East Thomas Yard with a rare pair of SD38Ps for power. Not long after the 270 passed this location the woods caught on fire, I wonder if sparks came from the exhaust stacks of 1557 & 1559 while they were under heavy load pulling this hill that set the woods on fire or was it just a careless smoker between one of the crew members on 270, or was it a careless smoker in a passing vehicle, you never know what happened, you be the Fire Chief Investigater as 270 passes by with the deturbo'd SD38P's in run 8 struggling up grade with smells of diesel & burning oil spewing from 1559, after these SD38P's 1557 & 1559 passed by this location the air was filled with a thick cloud of diesel, I'd bet the 1559 spewed out some sparks that set the woods on fire, it has been known to happen in the past. |

NS Westbound Vehicle Train 270 ( Birmingham to Lincoln, Al. Honda Plant ) passing through Prescott, Al. on their way back to BNSFs East Thomas Yard with an ultra rare pair of SD38P's for power. I've never caught these on a road train til this day, but have caught them more than once on transfer & yard jobs, these SD38P's are remote control equipped & aren't equipped with ditch lights, so 270 had to do 30 MPH through each crossing with the headend only then can get back up to track speed, but if there's multiple crossings back to back it's best to just stay at 30 MPH til there's a long stretch without crossings, these SD38P's were assigned to hump duties at Tennessee Yard in Memphis, Tn. & maybe other yards for many years |

NS Westbound Vehicle Train 270 ( Birmingham to Lincoln, Al. Honda Plant ) passing through Leeds, Al. as they duck under the Alabama Division Central of Georgia District AKA P Line with an ultra rare pair of SD38Ps for power, Ive caught these SD38Ps more than once on transfer & yard jobs, but never on a road train til this day, these SD38Ps arent equipped with ditch lights so the 270 had to run 30 MPH over each crossing with the headend only, then can get back up to track speed, but if there are numerous crossings not far apart may as well just stay at 30 MPH til theres a long strecth of no crossings, also these SD38P's are equipped with Remote Control Equipment for yard service which are what these units were built for, for a long time these units were assigned to hump service within Tennessee Yard in Memphis & maybe other yards as well, BNSF must've had nothing to use for power on 270 this day so had to use these or nothing is the only reason I can come up with why they would use these units in road service non ditch light equipped, must've been aggrivating not being able to do track speed due to the 30 MPH rule with the headend through crossings with engines not equipped with ditch lights. |
