B&O GP9 5943
Title:  B&O GP9 5943
Description:  B&O GP9 5943 at Lake Street and Western Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5943 was built as C&O 5943 in August 1955 (c/n 20852) on EMD Order 5413, becoming B&O 5943, then Coleton County 5943, then HB 5943. it is seen leaving the C&NW rails at Western Avenue (C&NW's coach yard is in the background) heading south on B&OCT rails. Note the former CB&Q composite hopper in the background to the right, acquired by the C&NW for ballast service.

CSXT (B&O) GP40-2 6150
Title:  CSXT (B&O) GP40-2 6150
Description:  CSXT (B&O) GP40-2 6150 on the BN at Clyde, Illinois on February 5, 1988, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as B&O 4251 in February 1977 (c/n 767034-5) it appears to be B&O 6150, although it is likely CSXT 6150. This is a GP40-2, based on further discussion with Patrick Smith, see Comments below. A couple of sources indicate that the turbocharger may be de-activated and the unit de-rated to 2200 horsepower to get around some emission standards. However, this did not occur until at least sometime in the 2000's.

B&O GP9 6581
Title:  B&O GP9 6581
Description:  B&O GP9 6581 southbound on the IHB at McCook, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. For those of you not familiar with this neighborhood, about a mile behind 6581 (or, a mile ahead of 6653) is the birth place of most EMD locomotives until about 1980 or so, EMD's plant at La Grange. A heck of a lot of dead locomotives past by this location, either as new units being delivered, or trade-ins destined for Pielet Brothers Scrap Yard, located roughly across these tracks from EMD. I imagine that most locomotives breath a sigh of relief after they passed by Pielet Brothers. I marked the GP9 as B&O even though the letters C+O appear on the frame.

B&O GP30 6906
Title:  B&O GP30 6906
Description:  B&O GP30 6906 at about Archer and Western Avenues in Chicago, Illinois on March 7, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in October 1962 (c/n 27623) on EMD Order 7628, eventually became CSXT 4110 and was later rebuilt to road slug CSXT 2289. Note the interesting mix of logos on the nose and the employee modification of the cab heater intake below the engineer's front window, covered over with red tape. This was one of the last manually controlled rail crossings in the city limits of Chicago, it was brought to my attention by an article in Trains Magazine, I will try to find the article.

B&O VO-660 8200
Title:  B&O VO-660 8200
Description:  B&O VO-660 8200, La Grange, Illinois, November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1941 (c/n 62489) as EJ&E 272. How it became B&O 8200 is a mystery to me. This locomotive illustrates Baldwin's second VO-660 design, or Phase 2, in which the radiator was changed from a Baldwin-built hand-assembled unit to a purchased unit. This solved several problems for Baldwin and reduced costs. The hand-assembled units (spotting detail was an oval opening on the front radiator grill) had a bad habit of springing leaks after a few hard couplings. Also the air flow was re-routed from a front intake-side discharge to a front intake-top discharge. The radiator shutters were change to air control, replacing the manual control of the previous design. The purchased radiators were spring-mounted to help cushion them during rough switching moves. As a result, the VO-660 (and VO-1000) was increased in length by 10 inches. Note that this unit does not have the characteristic cooling water expansion tank on the roof behind the headlight, a development introduced in 1943 as Baldwin addressed overheating issues. This unit also shows the styled contour sheets applied to the bottom corner of the cab and step from cab height to running board, abandon in 1943 as a cost-saving measure. It is seen here on Pielet Brothers setout track at LaGrange.

B&O A-3080 9371
Title:  B&O A-3080 9371
Description:  B&O LS-1000 (A-3080) 9371, La Grange, Illinois, November 15, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Completed by Lima-Hamilton (L-H) in February 1950 on Order 1212-DE as a stock locomotive and sold to the B&O as number 335, B&O class DS-14L, (c/n 9384), it was renumbered to 9371 during early 1957, re-classed to SB-5, and is seen here on the Pielet Brothers (scrap yard) setout track at La Grange, traded to EMD for new B&O SD35's. The B&O ordered ten 1,000 horsepower Lima-Hamilton switchers from L-H stock, original road numbers 330-339, later renumbered to 9366-9375.

The model LS-1000 is not an official L-H designation, but railfan's shorthand for a 1,000 hp L-H switcher. Lima-Hamilton issued specification numbers. I referred to a couple of sources in attempting to identify the model. The book, 'Lima - the History', by Eric Hirsimaki, states, 'On February 20, 1948, orders 1206-DE and 1207-DE were entered in the books. Order 1207-DE was assigned c/n's 9329 - 9348 to cover twenty 1,000 horsepower units built per specification A-3080.' This is the model designation that the Wikipedia and Yard Limit web sites use. A total of 38 A-3080 switchers were built. On November 28, 1949, L-H increased the horsepower to 1,200 by changing the prime mover fuel rack settings, and built ten (later increased to 15) 1,200 hp switchers for stock on Specification A-3170.
