Album Info:Covers the former Illinois Central trackage from Memphis, TN to Canton, MS. This line was once part of the IC's main line between Chicago and New Orleans, and hosted 8 passenger trains per day as late as the 1960's and hosted 2 to 4 piggyback trains per day until the 1990's. Amtrak's City of New Orleans used this line until 1995. Casey Jones had his famous wreck on this line on April 30, 1900. In the 1990's, then CEO Hunter Harrison decided to reroute all through traffic to the parallel Yazoo District due to this line's flatter profile. The Grenada District suffered from deferred maintenance throughout the Harrison years and was only used for local traffic/detour route until he sold this line in 2009 to V&S Railway, which is an affiliate company of A&K Railroad Materials. This new outfit formed a new company called the Grenada Railway to operate this line. During the Grenada Railway years, trains stopped running between Grenada and Canton and this segment was put up for abandonment in 2011. This abandonment was stopped due to a legal battle at the Surface Transportation Board led by the State of Mississippi and other concerned citizens, communities, and shippers. In 2013, the Grenada Railway attempted once again to abandon the Grenada to Canton segment but this abandonment was never allowed due to selling this line to the North Mississippi Regional Rail Authority in 2015. The rail authority then reached a lease purchase agreement with Iowa Pacific Holdings. Iowa Pacific operated this line until 2018, when International Rail Partners took over Iowa Pacific's lease purchase agreement with the rail authority. The entire line was reopened for revenue freight service in 2019.

Description:  New Orleans to Chicago pig train, I-02 is seen sitting on the main just south of Monroe St. on the south side of Grenada. They are waiting on southbound pig train, I-01 to get close to Grenada so they can pull into the siding. They would wait for the other train to get close to minimize the time the crossings are blocked while in the siding. The 6,113 ft. siding here has 4 street crossings. That Amtrak engine seen here is deadheading back north, it had been involved in a crossing accident.

Description:  The morning Grenada switcher has just cleared Siren Crossing with a cut of cars from the papermill. The head car is a "shoving platform" created from a wood rack. They used this car to shove to Hardy Wood Yard from North Yard.

Empty Grain

Description:  I walked outside my house to watch this empty grain go buy and to my surprise it stopped, then Conductor James Cobb got off and told me to take him to the rear of his train to see if he was going to clear Country Club Road and to take him to get something to eat. Turns out they had to stop clear of Monroe Street until a southbound train got in the clear at Grenada.

Description:  Yours truly lining a switch for the Batesville Local when I was 17. By this time, I had already been switching cars with these guys for 4 years. The two men in the background that were on that job are Conductor Jeff Clements and Brakeman Fred Goff. Once these old heads figured out they could use me as an additional brakman, they would frequently put me to work. I hired out with CN in 2006.

Description:  The Grenada to Jackson local comes back into Grenada going by my house with 110 cars. The head 3 cars are from International Paper at Winona. This train would go to work at night and make a turn to Jackson 6 days per week, covering 222 miles, switching up to 10 customers, handling up to 140 cars, and do it all in less than 12 hours. Engineer Willie Pullen, Conductor Wayne Bishop, Brakeman Lee Knight.

The 2 people on the ground from left to right are Brakeman Aaron Bishop (borrowing out from Jackson), Engineer J.L.Crawford, and on the engine is Traveling Engineer Ed Regal. Aarron no longer works for the railroad, JL retired in 2005 and Ed retired in 2014. These two engineers used to run IC passenger trains through here. The policeman in the car came down to the depot to see Amtrak stop, he was also a rail buff.
