By: | Marty Pfohl | Dates: | 5/14/2014 - 5/14/2014 | Album Info: | As an arm of the Royal Offices of Thailand, many of the SRT's locomotives carry the official seal of His Majesty King of Thailand, King Rama9. As well, all modern SRT power has a unique seal affixed to the carbody, called the 'Burachatra'. The story behind it is interesting: The Burachatra is the circular cast metal, inscripted plate found on every diesel locomotive in the SRT fleet. These plates commemorate, and are copies of, the official seal of H.R.H. Prince Burachat, who, at the time [1928] was the head of the SRT. Under his watch, the first diesel locomotives were brought to Thailand from Switzerland, thus starting the Diesel era on the SRT and making him what many consider to be the Father of the 'modern' SRT. In commemoration if this august acheievement, it was decreed that from that time in perpetuity all SRT diesels will have the Burachatra plate affixed to the carbody in his honour...now that is awesomely cool!!!
As for the Royal Seal of H.M. King Rama9, not all locomotives carry those. They were applied in 2012 in commemoration of the King's 84th birthday and many of those emblems are now fading from the brutal Thailand sun...my thanks to Ms. Sarnt for the research in getting this information, and of course, due to an ongoing technicality with the location editor, all photos were taken in Thailand, not the US!! |
