Sitting idle on this chilly, late winter's day, NS 5292 awaits Monday morning and its next assignment. Constructed by EMD in 1973 as Penn Central 8096, the unit kept that road number through its life on Conrail. Conveyed to NS in the Conrail split, the unit still shows its Big Blue heritage on this day but has since been repainted in NS black and white livery. Note the two patches on the nose, the sight of the locomotive's old marker lights that were removed after its acquisition by NS. |

WCRL 9 |
Description: |
Resting among the vintage rail equipment in the Nields St. yard is this GE built 65-ton switcher. Constructed in 1941 for the US Army as their number 7079, it was later sold to a private owner and moved to the Black River & Western Railroad of Ringoes, NJ. While at the Black River, it was used to help teach mechanical shop classes for students at North Hunterdon High School. The unit's next assignment was freight operations on the Octoraro Railway and affiliate Anthracite Railway in Pennsylvania. At the time this photo was taken, the unit was owned by the West Chester Railway Heritage Association and not in operating condition. As the West Chester Railroad operates on a former PRR branch, the paint scheme of the locomotive is similar to those worn by the Pennsy's own fleet of GE 44-ton switchers. In 2013, little number 9 was sold off to a private owner and left the West Chester Railroad for Delaware. |

Description: |
NJTR 4101, a former CNJ/NJDOT unit, shoves a Hoboken bound train out of the former DL&W Kingsland station. Originally built as a GP40P in 1968 and numbered as CNJ 3672, it was renumbered into the 4100 series upon the coming of Conrail in the 1970s. Rebuilt twice, first as a GP40PH in the 1980s, and later as a GP40PH-2 in the 1990s, it is the only unit of this fleet to maintain the same NJTR 4100 number throughout the rebuildings. |

One of the Black River & Western's Easter Bunny specials enters the Ringoes station after an early afternoon run through Hunterdon County. Power this day is one of the railroad's ex-Canadian Pacific SW-1200RS units. A graduate of the former GMD plant in Ontario, the unit still holds the same number that it wore serving CP for forty years. Acquired by the Black River system in 1999, along with a sister unit, it was one of the earliest locomotives to wear the current paint scheme of the New Jersey based operator. |

This former high hooded GP-9 now calls the Southern Railroad of New Jersey home. Constructed in 1956 as C&O 6099, it has since received a chop nose configuration and a paint job similar to the CNJ "Coast Guard" look of the 1970s. At the time of this photo, the locomotive was assigned to the SRNJ Winslow Junction division but has since migrated over to the railroad's operations around Salem, NJ. |

This locomotive has served its entire existance for a New Jersey based rail operation. |

The Stourbridge Line's rare EMD BL-2 is seen heading a northbound excursion for Honesdale on a late summer afternoon. Built in 1949 for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad, this unit is one of four ex-BAR BL-2s left in existance. At the time of this photo this locomotive was owned by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, with the railroad operated as the Stourbridge Railway, a subsidiary of New Jersey's Morristown & Erie Railway. The paint scheme is a slightly altered version of one the locomotive once wore for its original owner in northern Maine. |

Built in 1956 by MLW for the Canadian National as number 8181, this locomotive later went to work for Atlas Steel before coming to the New York countryside for excursion service. The CACV has painted and lettered the unit to match similar D&H Alcos that once worked the Cooperstown Branch. The number is also a tribute to the D&H, following the last S-4 for that road. |

Rebuilt to a GP10 while owned by Conrail, this locomotive has also seen service on freight and passenger trains at Jim Thorpe, and switching service at a quarry near Hershey, before coming to the former Reading Company Colebrookdale Line. Owned by Clinton Terminal Railroad of North Carolina, and leased to the Colebrookdale Railroad at the time of this photo, it has since moved on to Steam Into History at New Freedom, PA. Early afternoon finds a nicely painted GP18 on the head end of the East Penn Railroad's local freight bound for Pennsburg. The former NYS&W locomotive was built in 1962 as part of a three unit order to supplement aging Alco RS-1s and S-2s, after successful test runs with GP20 demonstrators from EMD. The trio provided reliable service for the Susquehanna for over forty years before being sold off and making their way to Pennsylvania. |

DLW 663 |
Description: |
A F3A, painted in the old DL&W freight scheme is one of the many fixtures of the old Lackawanna Scranton freight yards. Owned by the Tri-State Chapter of the NRHS, this unit is a replica of the Lackawanna locomotives that used to call this yard home. Constructed in 1948 by EMD, it was sold to the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad of northern Maine as number 504A, later renumbered to 44. Sold down to Tri-State in New Jersey during the 1980s, it was first restored to a CNJ/CRP orange and blue look and operated around southern New Jersey and Jim Thorpe, PA for many years before coming north and gaining the Lackawanna look. As this is one of the earlier F-units, number 663 still retains the "chicken wire" look on its sides. |

RRPX 563 |

A former Santa Fe switcher rests in the Whippany yard of the Morristown & Erie Railway after arranging some of the railroad's streamlined rolling stock from the former Maine Eastern operation. Built by EMD in 1953 as an SW9, this unit was originally ATSF 2432. The Santa Fe would later rebuild this unit in 1974 at their shops in San Bernardino, CA, redesignating it as an SSB1200 and renumbering it 1232. Retired from the active roster in the mid 1980s, the locomotive went to serve on Amtrak, where it acquired its present road number. Number 563 has been under the ownership of Railroad Power Leasing since the mid 2000s, working freight on the Morristown & Erie as well as a few other New Jersey shortlines. The unit is currently classified as an SW1200 by RRPX and has been given a paint job very similar to some of the M&E's regular freight locomotives. |
