Fresh Restoration |
Description: |
Our first stop of the day was the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum, taking advantage of the sun's position providing favorable lighting at this earlier hour of the day. Greeting us upon entering the yard is this former RDG GP7, restored within the last year to its as built appearance from the 1950s. |

RDG 621 |
Description: |
Reading Company 621 is a GP7, constructed as part of an order of sixteen units ordered from EMD by the railroad in the spring of 1953. This would be the largest order of these units acquired, the total number of GP7s operated being forty four. Number 621 came equipped with dynamic braking for freight service and served throughout the RDG system that stretched through Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and a small part of Delaware. Unlike many of its sister units, the 621 would never make it to Conrail, having been sold off to Emmons controlled shortline Maryland & Pennsylvania a month before the official startup of Big Blue. Operated around York, PA for a little over twenty years, the locomotive would be reassigned to home rails along the Perkiomen Branch with the takeover of the Penn Eastern Rail Lines by Emmons in the late 1990s. Never operated on the Perk due to some mechanical issues the ex-RDG unit, by this time numbered as MPA 1506, was stored and soon acquired for preservation by the museum. It is currently the only member of the Reading's GP7 fleet in preservation, although a few more exist in operation of various shortlines around the country. Like many GP series units from the 1950s, the 621 is set up for long hood forward operation. |

RDG 5308 |
Description: |
The sun shines down on this nicely preserved RDG Alco C630, one of the largest locomotives preserved from the former anthracite carrier and also the only surviving member of the Reading's fleet of twelve. Built between 1966 and 1967, number 5308 was assigned to mainline freight service between the railroad's terminals at Philadelphia, Reading, Harrisburg, Allentown, and Jersey City, NJ. Acquired by the museum in the 1980s after a stint on Conrail, the unit has been restored to the railroad's 1960s look, complete with Bee Line Service logos. |

RDG 5513 |
Description: |
Former RDG 5513 has the distinction of being the first production GP30 from EMD, one of twenty that the Reading Company would acquire for freight service over their mainlines in 1962. The first of the second generation units in RDG freight operations, the locomotive and its sisters were also the first to wear the paint scheme currently presented on this unit, as well as a few others around the museum property. Also take note of the cylindrical radio antenna on the roof above the conductor's seat, a known Reading Company feature. |

RDG 900 |
Description: |
The FP7 fleet was acquired by the Reading in the 1950s for use on long distance passenger service between Philadelphia and outlying points. Cities such as Reading, Pottsville, and Jersey City, NJ would see passage of these units daily at the head end of the railroad's name trains, including the Crusader, the Wall Street, and the King Coal. Only three survive today, including class leader 900, due to their use in operations for SEPTA well into the 1980s. RDG 900 is currently undergoing cosmetic restoration by the museum back to its as built appearance. We were happily able to see sister units 902 and 903 during a visit to Steamtown the previous weekend. |

RDG 9123 |
Description: |
Two tone green paint now adorns the side of this former electric commuter coach, once operated daily between Philadelphia's Reading Terminal and the railroad's electrified lines through the surrounding suburbs. Number 9123 was constructed by the Harlan & Hollingsworth division of Bethlehem Steel down in Wilmington, DE in 1932. Originally painted green and numbered 867, it was equipped with Taylor style trucks for a smoother ride, which are still retained today. The Reading rebuilt this car at the Reading shops in 1965 with a more modernized interior and a new blue and white paint job, earning it the nickname of Blueliner. The car last saw service for SEPTA in the late 1980s. Some interesting features on the exterior include the end marker lights, and the Reading style "drip strip" over the vestibule doors. The car also retains its headlights on both ends. |

RDG 5204 |
Description: |
Awaiting restoration back to Reading gold and green is one of two surviving Alco C424 diesels that the railroad purchased back in 1963. Used on heavy mainline freight consists, the locomotive worked for both the Reading and Conrail until retirement from service in 1979. After a rebuilt at the beginning of the 1980s, the unit went on to work for the Green Bay & Western, the operation where it received its current red look. The mid 1990s would see the 5204 returned to its home state once again for preservation. |

Description: |
Any visitors to Hersheypark between 1969 and 2015 will recognize this wood sized caboose, which was used for a variety of purposes throughout the park over the years. Built in 1942, at a time when the use of steel was heavily regulated due to the war effort, the car was a donation to the Hershey Company, one of the larger customers on the Reading system. Out of fifty cars constructed in that era, it is only one of a few to survive into the modern era. |

Description: |
A rather unique piece near the southern end of the museum's yard. This unit originally started out life as a Fairbanks-Morse built H-24-66 Trainmaster for the Wabash Railroad, number 552. Converted into a slug after the Norfolk & Western acquisition of the Wabash, the unit would work through the Norfolk Southern merger in the early 1980s. The Reading Company once operated similar F-M built units, making it a fitting display at this museum of Reading heritage. Perhaps a future restoration back to a full locomotive is in order. |

RCTH 485 |
Description: |
Former Reading RS3 485 arrived on the railroad in 1952 in an effort by the company to begin the process of replacing coal burning steam locomotives with cleaner and more efficient diesels. The Alco RS3s could be found in both freight and passenger service around the system, the 485 usually assigned to the western end freight operations. Its current paint scheme tells of its later life working in Canada, first for the Roberval & Saguenay and later for an Ontario paper company. It is currently one of five of the thirty three units purchased to survive in the 21st century and one of two in Pennsylvania. We had the opportunity to see sister unit 467 on display at Steamtown the previous weekend. |

RDG 2060 |
Description: |
After a very nice and informative tour around the main part of the museum yard, we were given permission by our guide to view and photograph other pieces not normally seen on the main tour. One of these was former Reading grill car number 2060. The grill car was once an important part of the Reading's long distance service, first serving on the Philadelphia-Pottsville "Schuylkill" before moving to the "Wall Street" between Philly and Jersey City/New York. Rebuilt from a standard commuter coach, number 1337, the car featured a kitchen for prepping small meals, and both counter and table seating. After retirement it became part of a restaurant and was later acquired by the museum. It is one of the few food service cars original to the Reading that survive, although some former RDG coaches have since been converted to dining cars on some tourist railroads post retirement from the former anthracite hauler. |

RTIX 774 |
Description: |
Another recent addition to the museum, this coach from the former Rail Tours Inc. fleet that for many years called Jim Thorpe, PA home. Constructed as RDG commuter coach 1276 by Bethlehem Steel's Harlan & Hollingsworth Division in 1923 for use in the Philadelphia commuter district, hauled by steam power. In 1947, the car was renumbered 774 when it and seven sisters were rebuilt as trailer cars for use with the electric MUs in the electrified suburban territory as a means to increase the number of available seats for passengers. After retirement from Philly area commuter service during the Bicentennial year, it was acquired by Rail Tours for operations out of Jim Thorpe on the former CNJ mainline, a service it provided until Rail Tours was replaced by the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in 2005. |

Description: |
Stored on the back siding between older coaches we found this streamlined Budd built RDC-1, displaying both RDG and MBTA markings. Number 9152 was built in 1962, the last RDC ever constructed by the Budd Company. It is also one of two on the Reading that was equipped with a special device to shunt crossing circuits, allowing it to operate as a single unit while in service. The other, former RDG 9151, survives today in the collection of the Plymouth & Lincoln Railroad of Lincoln, NH. Note that the car still has its grating attached to the engineer's window on the end, an addition by the MBTA to try and prevent rocks thrown by juveniles from injuring employees while in Boston area commuter service. |

Unlike conventional steam locomotives, this one does not require coal or a fire to operate, using steam from another source to charge it up so it can run for several hours. It is one of three fireless steam locomotives to survive today from the electric provider, all three still calling the Keystone State home. Note the large snowplow on the front to help combat those harsh Pennsylvania winters. |

Description: |
Colebrookdale Railroad 7236 stands ready for departure at Boyertown station. The first generation EMD was constructed in 1959 as part of the Pennsylvania Railroad's massive GP9 fleet that once exceeded two hundred units. Numbered 7236, it served the PRR in freight operations, working through Penn Central and into Conrail. During the Conrail era this unit was rebuilt into a GP10, one of many so refurbished in this manner in an effort to extend their service lives. After retirement from Big Blue, the Pennsy veteran bounced around to several different owners before coming to Boyertown at the start of 2016. It has since become the primary locomotive for Colebrookdale operations, treating visitors to a view of this area of Berks County. |

MEC 2001 |
Description: |
One of the Colebrookdale's future restoration projects is the former Maine Central instruction car, converted from a standard coach for the purpose of training employees on safety and railroad rules at outlying terminals along the Pine Tree Route. The first time I encountered this car was nine years ago at North Conway, NH in the yard of the Conway Scenic Railroad, where the Colebrookdale Railroad acquired the car from a few years back. It'll be nice to see it hit the rails again in the future. |

Another New Arrival |
Description: |
Parked among the historic buildings along Boyertown's Philadelphia Avenue is the most recent locomotive to join the Colebrookdale roster. Acquired from one of Norfolk Southern's recent locomotive auctions, the unit is reportedly in great mechanical shape and will soon be repainted and placed in passenger service along the branch. |

NHRR 40 |
Description: |
Heading up the first Easter Bunny Express of the day is the New Hope & Ivyland's well known Baldwin built Consolidation number 40, fresh from a recent rebuild. The 1925 built steamer, originally from the Lancaster & Chester Railway, has called the former Reading Company New Hope Branch home since the summer of 1966. Also note the railroad's new dining car "Crater Lake" right behind the locomotive. |
