Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "New York-Chicago Flyer.'" No Postmark. Front Caption: "The P.R.R. New York-Chicago Flyer. (The 18-hour train)." Nonetheless, the lettering on the Combine indicates that this is actually "The Pennsylvania Special." It's powered by Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6018, a D-16B (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata as number "5201" during August of 1907, sent to the West Jersey & Seashore Railroad and renumbered "6018" in July of 1917, and retired in July of 1927 after 20 years of faithful service. The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Logan House, Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. This structure was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad for the comfort and convenience of the many passengers who passed through Altoona. This was also the site of the Loyal War Governors' Conference, 24-25 September 1862. During this Conference, the governors of 14 Northern States not only reaffirmed their support to pursue the War of Succession, but also voiced support for President Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation." Located on 11th Avenue between 12th & 13th Streets, it was demolished after the Second World War to make room for the new Post Office Building.

Caption On Reverse: "The conquest of the Allegheny Mountains has been a problem for engineering skill. A heavily-loaded train, as shown in the picture, still requires an immense amount of motive power." Actually, this phouo was taken along the eastbound mainline tracks between Cresson and Gallitzin. It's on the Pittsburgh Division, therefore, not the Tyrone Division as indicated on the postal card.

Among other things, the Altoona Machine Shops produced 2,289 steam locomotives and tenders in the 38 years from the time it first opened in December of 1866 until it ceased production in January of 1904. The Civil War-era, wrought-iron, 12th Street Footbridge was replaced in December of 1965! The artist's name is not recorded.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "General View, Juniata Shops, P.R.R., Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. Among other things, the Juniata Shops produced 4,584 steam and electric locomotives in the 55 years from the time they first opened in July of 1891 until they ceased production in June of 1946. That's Chestnut Avenue in the foreground, while portions of the Altoona Yards are visible behind the Shop buildings. Produced and distributed by I. & M. Ottenheimer of Baltimore, Maryland, c. 1917.

On the left is the Eastbound Classification Yard, toward the right are numerous crew-specific cabin cars, then there's the gantry crane for the ash pit, and finally there's the trestle for the wooden coaling wharf. Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "South Altoona Shops, Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. Among other things, the Brass Foundry situated here produced all of the PRR's brass friction bearings and locomotive bells. In later years, a coal-fired electric power plant was built here; it supplied the electricity for all of the Altoona Works. That's the Sixth Avenue Road in the foreground, not visible behind the Shop buildings is the branch line between Hollidaysburg (to the left) and Altoona (to the right), while the imposing Allegheny Mountains are barely visible in the distance. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad. New Type Passenger Locomotive." Postmarked: 26 March 1917. Engine #3395 is the K-29 (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the American Locomotive Company as a K-29 in October of 1911, rebuilt in Juniata as a K-29S in August of 1913, and retired in September of 1929 after just 18 years of experimental service.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "P.R.R. Station, Looking West, Altoona, Pa." Postmarked: 24 February 1919. Prominent here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's Logan House, site of the Civil War era "Loyal War Governors' Conference." In front of it is the trainshed which sheltered passengers from the elements for 90 years before it was demolished in 1960.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad New Type Passenger Locomotive." Postmarked: 28 March 1925. Caption On Reverse: "Type K-4s Passenger Locomotive." #1737 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1914, renumbered "3750" in 1956, and retired in February of 1960 after 46 years of faithful service. Note the manual reverse, piston rod extension, boiler-tube pilot, bell cord, as well as the old-style electric headlight. #1737 is the original K-4S.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "12th Street from 11th Avenue, showing Bridge and Machine Shop, by night, Altoona, Pa." Postmarked: 15 August 1931. Among other things, the Altoona Machine Shops produced 2,289 steam locomotives and tenders in the 38 years from the time it first opened in December of 1866 until it ceased production in January of 1904. The Civil War-era, wrought-iron, 12th Street Footbridge was replaced in December of 1965! The artist's name is not recorded.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad Mountain Type Locomotive." Postmarked: 1 May 1933. Depicted here is engine #6800, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in August of 1926 and retired in August of 1955 after 29 years' service. It's the first "Mountain" that Baldwin built for the PRR.
