One day in early 1984 I was working in North Billerica, Massachusetts (not for B&M). E. Maureen Byrne, a coworker, walked by my cubicle and noticed the railroad themed calendar on the partition. She stopped and asked if I were interested in trains. She said she enjoyed riding trains and had been on one when it derailed “somewhere in the middle of Colorado.” She didn’t remember which train it was, or exactly when or exactly where it had derailed. She did remember it was in a narrow canyon and she had to walk a long distance on the tracks carrying luggage to a bus. Then she said she had some slides of the derailed train. Would I like to see them? She allowed me to have duplicates made. Maureen was aboard the e/b D&RGW California Zephyr that derailed at Grizzly, Glenwood Canyon, Colorado, 3/29/68. F9A #5774 and F9B #5772 derailed, were retired and scrapped. It appears from the second picture that F9A #5771, was the last unit in the consist because D&RGW had only two F9As. One of the two steam generator cars built from PB-1s also derailed. Thank you, E. Maureen Byrne.
