Western Pacific Heritage Unit
Title:  Western Pacific Heritage Unit
Description:  Pushing on the rear of ILADU-18 through Loma Linda, after having just waited on two westbounds, we see Union Pacific SD70ACe #1983, the Western Pacific Heritage Unit. This unit was debuted in Omaha, NE on July 30, 2005 to honor the employees of the former railroad, which had been merged into the Union Pacific. On this day, the unit was being chased by many local SoCal railfans, as it started that morning at East Yard, then headed out the Los Angeles Sub to Riverside, where it entered the BNSF San Bernardino Sub, to the Cajon Sub, where it switched over the Union Pacific's Yuma Sub at Colton Crossing. It is on its way to Dupo Yard near East St. Louis, IL.

Los Angeles & Salt Lake Arrowhead - "The Salt Lake Line"
Title:  Los Angeles & Salt Lake Arrowhead - "The Salt Lake Line"
Description:  I believe that this arrowhead on the old Los Angeles & Salt Lake's backshops at 530 S. Anderson in LA is the last original LA&SL logo left on a structure in the world (there is a reproduction in Whittier). I have been told that this building was actually attached to the LA&SL roundhouse. The tracks came in on the other side of the backshops. (The following information is paraphrased from the works of the wonderful railroad historian - Fred Gamst - mostly from the fascinating article at this addresss "http://www.blet660.com/uploads/C6.20.08TropicoDivision660.pdf" -- The shops and the roundhouse, now long gone, were part of the "Middle District." LA&SL engineers lived in nearby Boyle Heights and would walk here after the crew caller would come by on a bicycle to call them to duty. When the new 2-8-0s were delivered here in 1905, they consumed so much fuel and water they were called "Hogs," and the engineers were called "Hoggers" and "Hogheads." Making this home to the BLET 660 hogheads.)

The "George Bush 41" engine
Title:  The "George Bush 41" engine
Description:  Union Pacific SD70ACe #4141 is painted a'la Air Force One to honor the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush. The unit was unveiled to the former President at the opening of his library in October of 2005. The unit has been called the "Papa Bush," and is seen here on IMNLB-24, a Arkansas Intermodal Facility to Intermodal Container Transfer Facility train, travelling between Marian, AK and Long Beach, CA. While it's on the Alhambra Sub here, it's about to cross over to the Los Angeles Sub to head through East Yard (which sucked because I chased it down the Alhambra Sub and never saw it again).

Chicago and Northwestern Heritage Unit
Title:  Chicago and Northwestern Heritage Unit
Description:  Leading the customer's special SLBOA1-27 at Moorpark in the early morning run up the coast, Union Pacific SD70ACe #1995, the Chicago and Northwestern heritage unit, pauses to wait on a southbound Metrolink train, finally allowing me to get a shot, after two failed attempts at Chatsworth and the Moorpark stations. Having begun the morning at the International Container Transfer Facility in Carson (ICTF, railroad Long Beach), #1995 ran up the Alameda Corridor, to Metrolink's River Sub, recrewed at CP Main Street, and is seen here on Metrolink's Valley Sub. In about half an hour it will regain UP rails on the Santa Barbra Sub, as it takes the old SP Coast Line the whole way north to Oakland.

The Red Monorail at the Main Entraince of Disneyland
Title:  The Red Monorail at the Main Entraince of Disneyland
Description:  Burke Composite Design Mark VII Red was the only train running on the last day of March, and that wouldn't last all that long, as the unit would break down a few hours after it was seen passing the main entrance here. This train was delivered back on December 20 of 2007, making it the first of the Mark VIIs on the property. It was built in Vancouver, BC and travels on a 2.5 mile long loop (for about a 13 minute long trip around the park). This was the first time I have ever been to the park and witnessed only a single train servicing the entire monorail ride. When it brokedown, a diesel tractor came out to rescue it, scurrying along the track.

Englewood Yard and Houston Skyline
Title:  Englewood Yard and Houston Skyline
Description:  Englewood Yard and Houston skyline from Wayside Drive - Built in 1956 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, Englewood Yard was a state of the art hump and classification facility. The tracks to the right are the one time Texas & New Orleans "Sunset Route," today's Union Pacific Terminal Sub. What I thought would be a perfect shot doesn't work out exactly right because UP runs westbounds only on this line so this view is only of the back of a trains.

OHE Tower Wagon "Garuda"
Title:  OHE Tower Wagon "Garuda"
Description:  Just south of the Vasai Road station is this tower wagon, which appears to actually be a bit too large for the shed that is provide for it at this extremely busy junction on the Western Railway. OHE stands for OverHead Electric. Built by ICF, this diesel electric is 750 HP and is actually powerful enough to do light shunting if necessary. Built by ICF (Integral Coach Factory at Perambur), this is a class RU DETC.

Indian ALCO
Title:  Indian ALCO
Description:  ALCO powered diesel train with 31 stops from Rajkot Junction/RJT to Coimbatore Junction/CBE makes one of those stops at Vasai Road. For a lifelong ALCO fan, it was still kind of wild to see an ALCO roadswitcher hauling a 22 car passenger train in 2009... and as much as this may not look exactly like an American RSD12, it sure sounded exactly like one.

Title:  D&H "South Bronx Express"
Description:  Delaware & Hudson 417, the South Bronx Express a Fresh Pond to Oak Point manifest rumbles through about 15 minutes after the sun vanished behind the Harmon shops. Three SD40-2s with specially modified pilots for the third rail and 44 MTYs make up tonight's train. They would get stabbed just a few miles further north at Peekskill. Thanks to alert of NH from the Hudson River Rail Lines YahooGroups for letting me know this train was on the way, or I'd have seen it through the windows of my commuter train back.
