Album Info:Here are 3 scanned images from older b&w photos of Norfolk & Western's massive articulated steam locomotives. These are not Mallets as technically they have a simple expansion system rather than the true compound expansion system. Two of these were taken during a N&W fan trip.

NW 2-6-6-4 #1206 - Norfolk & Western
Title:  NW 2-6-6-4 #1206 - Norfolk & Western
Description:  Taken during a fan trip in 1958, this articulated class A locomotive built by the N&W shops in 1936 had 70" drivers, developed a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and exerted a massive 125,897 lb tractive force. Roller bearings throughout made this one of the peak efficient steam locomotives ever built and could compete with effectively with diesels for awhile. Unfortunately, they too succombed to the scrap pile and were retired between 1958-59. This may have been one of its last runs before retirement, if not THE last one!

NW 2-6-6-4 #1206 - Norfolk & Western
Title:  NW 2-6-6-4 #1206 - Norfolk & Western
Description:  Here is an almost identical shot of NW 1206 taken during a fan trip in 1958. Built by the N&W shops in 1936, this articulated class A locomotive had 70" drivers, developed a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and exerted a massive 125,897 lb tractive force. Roller bearings throughout made this one of the most efficient steam locomotives ever built and could compete with effectively with diesels for awhile. Unfortunately, they too succombed to the scrap pile and were retired between 1958-59. As stated in the previous photo, this may have been one of its last if not THE last runs before retirement.

NW 2-6-6-4 #1220 - Norfolk & Western
Title:  NW 2-6-6-4 #1220 - Norfolk & Western
Description:  Here is another N&W articulated steam loco spotted at Schaeffer's Crossing in Roanoake, VA a day after the N&W fan trip. Like the previous sister #1206, she was built by the N&W shops in 1936 with 70" drivers, whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and a massive 125,897 lb tractive force, Like the rest of the class A articulateds, she was retired between 1958-59, so this may very well have been one of her last times under pressure.
