Alamogordo Local Waiting to Head South |
Description: |
Rock Island GP40 384 is prepared to take the SP's Alamogordo (NM) local south to El Paso in September 1973. Seven boxcars and an SP caboose make up the entire train today. Traffic was mostly for a wood mill in town along with the occasional car dropped off for the Air Force. |

CRIP 384 |
Description: |
OKLAHOMA CITY OK October 1975 -- Vandals broke a switch lock, through the switch and tampered with the switch signal to show the wrong aspect. The result was that Rock Island 384 left the main track and came to rest at the end of this warehouse spur. The train was westbound on the westside of the city. I don’t recall if anyone was injured in this incident. EMD built the unit January 1969. In 1981 New Jersey Transit acquired it as NJTR 4138. In December 1987 Morrison-Knudsen rebuilt it into a GP40FH-2. Included in the rebuild was a cowl hood from F45 BN 6639.
