Description:  Rock Island received 20 GP40s from EMD in 1970 with the financial help of UP, which were numbered in the 4700 series in anticipation of a me|ger with the bigger road that never ocurred. They ended up going to the UP after the Rock's 1980 shutdown, 4705 becoming UP 636. It has since become MNA 4014.

Title:  CRI&P GP40 4708
Description:  CRI&P GP40 4708, Howe, Oklahoma, June 19, 1975, photo by Paul L. Strang, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in March 1970 (c/n 36394) on EMD Order 7263, it was financed by the UP and leased to the Rock Island. When the RI shut down in 1980, the leased units were returned to the UP, this particular unit was renumbered to 639 (April 5, 1980). It was repainted into UP paint on May 2, 1980, received Missouri Pacific North Little Rock lettering September 23, 1985, and was retired by the UP October 23, 1991. Also, the following is from Utahrails.net: MP 639 was leased to NdeM in October 1989 to March 1991; returned UP and stored unserviceable; sold to Phoenix Railway Corp., Spokane, Wash., in February 1992; sale rescinded; sold to Helm Financial, 27 March 1992.

Description:  RI GP40 4708, one of many that were financed by Union Pacific in anticipation of the UP/RI merger. Union Pacific had pulled out of%the merger preceedings saying they could afford the repairs of the ailing Rock Island by this time. The 4708 was retained by UP after shutdown.

Apparentlly, It wasn derailed in Oklahoma by kids who opened a switch in 1978. They only painted what they fixed. No date, location or photographer name given on this slide. Description:  EL RENO OK Jan 5 1976 -- Rock Island GP40 4712 leads a mixed freight leaving the yard eastbound. EMD built the 4712 (b/n 36398) ub April 1970. After the Rock shut down Union Pacific acquired it on April 1 1980. It became UP 643 but retained its Rock paint. On April 29 1980 it was painted in UP colors. It was leased by NdeM from October 1989 to June 1990, was stored unserviceable at Fort Worth, retired on Aug 21 1991, sold to National Railway Equipment (Dixmoor IL) on Oct 9 1991 and in September 1994 acquired by Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern as DME 4002 in Blue with yellow stripe and later in 20th Anniversary Commemorative paint.
