SP Train No. 7 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific P-9 class Pacific 629 was hurrying out of New Orleans with train No. 7 – the wostbound ALAMO – in April 1951. Despite its grand name, by this time the train was an all-stops kocal which left the Crescent City at 8:25 A.M. and arrived in Houston at 7:00 P.M. Between 1902 and 1954 SP trains used the Illinois Central’s UNION STATION, and No. 7 was seen here running over the IC near Southport Junction, on its way to the Huey P. Long Bridge. This train included three express cars, a Railway Post Office and three coaches. The ALAMO was discontinued in December 1952, and the 629 was scrapped in January 1954. (approximate day of photo) |

T&P 4-6-2 704 |
Description: |
Texas & Pacific P-1-r class Pacific 704 was outside the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans' engine house at RACE STREET YARD. The loco had been built by Baldwin (51666) in April 1919 as T&P 604 and then almost immediately renumbered 704. It was modernized with Boxpok main drivers, roller bearings, a larger tender and other improvements in April 1944, and received running board skirts in July 1949. Half of the T&P's 22 Pacifics received blue-and-gray EAGLE paint jobs; but only two, the 704 and 706, were fitted with skirts. The engine was retired in March 1952, the engine house was razed around 1967 and Race Street Yard was removed in 1984. (approximate date of photo) |

CEI 4-6-2 #1003 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Nice example of a 1910 Baldwin built K-1 class 4-6-2 Pacific for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR. Originally it was built at #334 but modified in 1930. No location, date or photographer was listed for the photo. Since the tender carries the loco number, the photo must have been taken after 1941 when the C&EI switched tender markings to numbers rather the the former "C&EI" labels. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1006 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
One of the last Baldwin K-1 4-6-2 Pacifics built in December of 1910 for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR. No location, date or photographer was listed for the photo. Since the tender carries the loco number, the photo must be after 1941 when the C&EI dropped its tender lettering for the locoo number. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1008 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Nice example of a Baldwin K-2 4-6-2 Pacific built in December of 1911 for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR. No location, date or photographer was listed for the photo. Since the tender is still wearing the large "C&EI", the photo was taken before 1941 when the rr switched to loco numbers on the tender. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1008 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Only loco in the K-2 4-6-2 Pacifics built by Baldwin in 1911-12 to be streamlined was #1008. The streamlining done in 1940 was purely cosmetic in appearance with no internal improvements. The loco was used to head up the C&EI Dixie Flager. James Bowie photo. No exact date given or location for the photo. |

CEI 4-6-2 #1008 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois |
Description: |
Looking sharp in its 1940 streamlined sheathing is Baldwin K-2 4-6-2 Pacific #1008, the only K-2 to be streamlined. The loco was used to head up the crack Dixie Flager train. Thanks to Mike Woodruff who identified the location (see comment below), this was taken at the 63rd Street station at Englewood just outside Chicago, IL. Sid Davies photo |

Chicago & Eastern Illinois 4-6-2 #1008 |
Description: |
Shrouded in a streamlined shell with its bold, wide "racing" stripe, C&EI #1008 looks great with the fireman casually leaning out the window. Built by Baldwin in 1911 as a class K-2 Pacific-type loco, it had 73" drivers, engine+tender wheelbase of 67.34' and an engine weight of 263,600 lb. Bet it was a beautiful sight flying down the trackes! Not sure but the photographer may have been Tom Mohiz of Chicago - that or a previous owner of the photo. |
