Description:  Here is page three of a five-page article by Al Rung entitled "Christmas Eve On The Broadway." It was published originally in the December 1948 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 28. Top Photo: Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5823 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BP-50's for freight service. #5823 was built during 1947 and retired in 1964. Description:  Here is a photo taken by Mr. H. Cotterell, Jr. It was published originally in the November 1950 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 58. Photo Caption: "PRR rubber-tired, storage-battery switcher at Jersey City." Mr. Cotterell's Commentary: "No. 14379 is one of two rubber-tired, storage-battery locomotives used by the Pennsylvania Railroad for switching freight cars through the streets of the Paulus Hook section of Jersey City between the famous Colgate soap plant and docks located south of the Pennsy Station at Exchange Place. Each is steered by means of a large pilot wheel, similar to that on a boat." Tractor #14379 was built in Juniata about 1916.
