Burlington Northern Railroad class ARS-3 4056 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in January 1952 as SP&S 71 (c/n 79594), retired in April 1980. Alco's internal model designation was E1662, Alco's marketing people called it RS-3, and BN stenciled the frame ARS-3. A comment from S. L. Dixon offers the following: That white stuff all over the walkways and the top is Mount Saint Helen's ash, which blew on May 18, 1980, and Vancouver Washington, and Portland, Oregon, got hit with some serious ashfall. |
