On 1 February 1970 Southern Railway train No. 48 the SOUTHERNER was redesignated No. 2 the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. On Tuesday 20 October 1970 the train went from daily to tri-weekly operation between New Orleans and Birmingham. Here is train No. 2 on Wednesday 21 October with two sets of power, because the equipment that had arrived in New Orleans on Monday evening did not go out on Tuesday morning. Notice the Automatic Train Stop contact shoe on the third axle of the 2927's front truck. ATS had been deactivated on 15 May 1970. That's the photographer's yellow Volkswagen Beetle parked on the platform. |
