CSXT 898 Editors Pick!
CSXT 898 and 779 lead 56 loaded coal hoppers off of the Gauley Branch over the New River and onto the CSX ex-C&O Mainline at Gauley Bridge, WV. The Gauley Branch is a lightly used branch with a very steep grade from the town of Gauley Bridge up and over the New River. These 2 AC units were struggling and it took three attempts to make it over the bridge. The first attempt the train stalled short of the trestle, then the units uncoupled, ran light and sanded various parts of the line and then tried 2 more times, this being the successful one. They could really have used either helpers or another unit on the head end. It was snowing pretty heavily and the temperature was about 17 degrees this day.

Curt Beal General Thanks for the lengthy description. It was very interesting. I wonder why they didn't give this full coal train more power. At least it allowed you to get a perfect shot. 1/20/2010 10:51:08 PM
