NYLE 6764
PThat is the "Dayton Loops" the train is passing through. Overhead would have been the right of way for the northern stretch of the Dunkirk Branch, which went up to Lake Erie ports at Dunkirk.

Oretty shot, as is the one taken from the Dunkirk Branch grade-a challenge to get, but looking like it was worth the effort. The Dunkirk Branch is the original chartered(1835) Erie main, the charter from NY State to build from tidewater to the lakes, in this case, Dunkirk on Lake Erie. Later, the Erie would acquire the NY,PA & Ohio(NYPANO) and build west from Salamanca into Ohio, which along with the Columbus & Erie, would eventually become the Erie, then EL, main line to Chicago. The original main to Dunkirk would become a branch, and by the early 70's, would be out of service between here and Cattaraugus, and no longer a through route. Pretty line, nice photos. I don't miss much about living in the northeast, but I do miss the chance to go out and get some good snow photos, though not the seven month winters.
