Precision National SD18m 1852 on the BN at Clyde, Illinois, April 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1852 was built in September 1959 as UP SD24 427 (c/n 25385) on EMD Order 5602, delivered to the UP with an EMD low short hood. In October 1977, this unit and four other UP SD24's (#'s 407, 416, 418, 421 and 427) were sold to PNC, later becoming PNC lease units 1848-1852 respectively. They were all sent to Morrison Knudsen for rebuilding, returning without turbochargers and dynamic brakes. They were leased to the BN for about a year, then leased to the C&NW, finally sold to the C&NW in March 1982, the pictured unit becoming C&NW 6647. On the PNC they were classed as SD10's, the C&NW classed them as SD18R's, here they are classed as SD18m's because that is what is available under Rebuilt EMD, and hopefully prevents confusion with MILW SD10's, which were derived from SD7's and SD9's. |
