| CB&Q NE1 14351 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The sign by the door reads: SHIPPING DOCUMENTS LOCATED HERE. Somewhat unusual, but the CB&Q assigned waycars (caboose) to specific Conductors, so this may have been a custom modification. I recall that this waycar was assigned to Mr. John Sylogye. I became an honorary member of the crew around this date when I started hanging around and they became aware that my step-father operated the cafeteria at Kroehler Manufacturing Company, where the most switching was done in Naperville. I was allowed to fill their coffee thermoses! They got free hot coffee, I was out of their hair for a while, and I felt like I was contributing. I remember the smell of burning coal when I visited the interior of 14351, and I tasted my first cup of coffee in that waycar, hanging out with the crew after we completed the job. |
