PRR Coaling Tipple, 1965
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is a view facing north. A speeding westbound passenger train is about to pass through "The Hole" under HOMER Tower (not visible on the left). In the background are the Westbound Hump tracks linking the Classification Yard (to the left) with the Receiving Yard (to the right). In the foreground are two in- and out-bound tracks for freight traffic. The girder bridge at the lower right passes over the East Branch of the Juniata River which winds its way through Tyrone and Spruce Creek, and merges eventually with the West Branch near Huntingdon.
