A Grand Central bound train rolls out of Brewster on a cold winter day. The FL 9s were hand me downs from the New Haven, acquired when it was forced into the Penn Central n 1969. By then, the long haul business was in decline, and they started to work their way onto NYC lines, supplanting the Centrals fleet of RS 3s. Amtrak took a dozen of these units at start up in 1971, the rest going to PC. They became a staple of the diesel trains on the Harlem Line, as well as Poughkeepsie trains. |
