New Orleans Public Belt 32 was one of three 900-horsepower Baldwin model 8DE900/1 built as NOPB 31-33 in December 1937 at a cost of $89,870 each. (The NOPB's next three diesels, model VO660's bought in 1941-42, only cost $61,771 each.) These were the first Baldwin diesel-electric locomotives built specifically for a customer, and not as test beds or demonstrators. Here the 33 was heading upriver by the Douglas Public Service BLOCK Y WAREHOUSE at Iberville Street. All three of these were retired in 1969 and scrapped by Southern Scrap Materials in New Orleans in 1970. (approximate date) |
