| For many years this pedestrian overpass allowed people using the Canal Street ferry to avoid six railroad tracks, owned by the Southern Pacific, Louisville & Nashville and New Orleans Public Belt. From 1902 until 1954 the L&N railroad station was in the open area on the left of the walkway and was used by up to 20 trains a day, many of which blocked Canal Street as they loaded or unloaded passengers. After L&N passenger trains relocated to the new Union Passenger Terminal in April 1954, the rail traffic here consisted of infrequent freight trains so the overpass fell out of use and was removed in the 1960’s. The building in the left background at No. 1 Canal Street belonged to the Alcoa Steamship Company. |
