Southern Pacific (Texas & New Orleans) SE-3 class 0-8-0 856 was on the rear of an eastbound transfer run at the railroad’s AVONDALE YARD, preparing to help the train up the 1.25% grade on the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE. The transfer caboose was T&NO 60 and WEST BRIDGE TOWER can be seen in the distance near the front of the train. The 856 had been built by the SP at Houston in March 1931 as the 181, using the boiler from MM-1 class 2-6-6-2 900. It was renumbered in September 1950 and sold for scrap at Houston in October 1954.
