Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here is an unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad "M" Class (4-8-2) "Mountain" steam locomotive rounding the Curve with a manifest freight train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Note that it's running on Track 3, which is usually reserved for westbound traffic. John S. Fisher Collection; #10 of 14. |
