| This is a page from the February 1970 register book at Americus GA and appears to show the effects of a nearly complete renumbering of trains. The City of Miami is now numbered #13/14 (Note on 2/17 it appears to be powered by the CofG's very own #812). Other changes include a change in timetable directions. Albany to Columbus is now considered westbound while trains traveling from Albany to Macon now change timetable direction at Americus and are considered eastbound from Americus to Macon. Therefore #125 becomes #190 and #189 becomes #126 for trains traveling between Macon and Albany. #83 and #84 keep their numbers and continue as a local operating between Americus and Eufaula via Smithville. I went to work for Southern in 1981 and many of the people shown on these pages were still at Southern when I went to work there. Their names have special meaning for me and fond memories. "Browning" was Ray Browning who also worked the local from Albany to Dothan, which passed through my hometown of Hilton GA, and was probably the person most responsible for me becoming the railfan I am today. He passed away not long after I went to work for Southern in 1981. "Hinson" is Jack Hinson, "Yarbrough" is Grady Paul Yarbrough who told me of how his first job on the railroad was firing a steam locomotive from Albany down to Dothan. "Dorsey" is David Dorsey. "Thompson" is Jimmy Thompson, a bear of a man who died of a heart attack while playing softball. Intersting stuff.....thought some might like it. |
