CB&Q 2-10-4 Class M-4 6318
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-10-4 Class M-4 6318 at Centralia, Illinois on May 5, 1941, photograph by R. J. Foster, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. This photo presents a date conflict. The print is maked as 1941, the book, Steam Locomotive of the Burlington Route indicates number 6318 was rebuilt in December 1939 to Class M-4-A. I usually judge the locomotive as rebuilt by the extra step in the running board just above the front of the firebox, which stepped over the soot blowers, installed during rebuilding. Also during rebuilding the rear sand dome was moved forward and located just ahead of the steam dome. So, one of the two dates appears to be incorrect.

Description:
Nice roster shot of Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 2-10-4 "Colorado" type steam locomotive #6316 as it sat in the Centralia, IL, yard. The CBQ called the 2-10-4 wheel configuration a "Colorado" type, not a "Texas" type like most other railraods called it. This "Colorado" type steam locomotive was built by Baldwin in November of 1927 as Chicago, Burlington & Quincy #6316 (serial #60262, class M-4). It was rebuilt in November of 1939 to the M-4-A class with an increase in overall speed. The loco served for 34 years before being sold for scrap in April of 1961. Rebuilt specs - 64" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 28x32" cylinders, engine wt of 504,570 lb, and tractive force of 83,300 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

CBQ 2-10-4 #6316 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Description:
Here is another nice roster shot of an older Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 2-10-4 "Colorado" type steam locomotive #6316 as it sat in an unidentified yard - probably at Centralia, IL. The CBQ referred to the 2-10-4 wheel configuration as a "Colorodo" type, not the more traditional name of "Texas". This 2-10-4 "Colorado" type steam locomotive was built by Baldwin in November of 1927 as Chicago, Burlington & Quincy #6316 (serial #60262, class M-4). Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-8-0 Class F-1 543 at Centralia, Illinois on an unknown date in 1952, photograph by C. W. Burns, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 543 was one of 175 0-8-0's built to USRA specifications, this one by the Brooks Works of Alco in 1919 (c/n 61236), was one of ten USRA 0-8-0's on the CB&Q (#'s 540-549) and was scrapped in August 1956. Note under the rear of the firebox is a box marked FIRE HOSE, not the best choice of locations, in my opinion.

CBQ 2-10-4 #6317 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Description:
Starting to show some age is Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 2-10-4 "Colorado" type steam locomotive #6317. On the CBQ roster the locos were referred to as "Colorado" type loco, not "Texas". This 2-10-4 "Colorado" type steam locomotive was built by Baldwin in November of 1927 as Chicago, Burlington & Quincy #6317 (serial #60281, class M-4). To increase speed, the loco was rebuilt in December of 1939 to the M-4-A class. After nearly 34 years of dedicated service, the loco was unceremoniously sold for scrap in May of 1961 after diesels had firmly taken over the duties. Rebuilt specs - 64" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 28x32" cylinders, engine wt of 504,570 lb, and tractive force of 83,300 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4952
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4952 at Centralia, Illinois on May 12, 1956, photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. This might be a good photo to explain (as I understand it) the Elesco Feed Water System, named for the initials in the manufacturer's name, the Locomotive Superheater Compaany, LSCo. The water in the tender was piped up in the diagonal pipe below the cab to the pump above the rear driver, then pumped up to the cylindrical device located between the headight and stack. There coiled pipes of cold tender water would pass through a chamber of hot steam, pre-heating and routing the heated tender water through the check valve below the sand dome.
