Several white-hot rivet heaters are visible in the middle of the photo. On the right, a number of well-worn gondolas are in the process of being reconditioned. The first freight car was out-shopped on Wednesday, 3 August 1955.

Description:  SRS. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 16 July 1959. Prominent here is the eastern end of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Samuel Rea Car Shop (SRS). A string of a dozen or so newly-reconditioned boxcars are parked just outside of one of the Shop's doors. In the foreground are oodles of PRR freight cars that have been marshalled for eventual reconditioning at SRS or scrapping at the Reclamation Plant in Frankstown. Also visible is the steeple of the Blair County Court House at the far right, as well as the ghostly outlines of the eastern slopes of the Allegheny Mountains in the distance.

Description:  SRS. Here is an original photo that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 2 August 1960. At the far right is the Bedford-Cumberland Branch Line, which now serves as the Everett Railroad's right-of-way. In the center are the tracks of the Eastbound Receiving Yard, often filled with freight cars marshalled for reconditioning at the Shop. Visible in the center distance are the old wooden water tower (the last vestige of the Steam Age in Hollidaysburg) and the western end of the Samuel Rea Shop. This easterly view taken from the southern end of the Union Street Bridge.

Photo Caption: "The car shops at Hollidaysburg, Pa., used to be a major repair point for the Norfolk Southern, but were shut down a few years ago." Shown here (R to L) are: (A) the structure that used to be the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Samuel Rea Shop," then the Norfolk Southern's "Hollidaysburg Car Shop," and now called the "DeGol Industrial Center"; (B) the virtually-empty tracks of the old Westbound Classification Yard, now called the "Hollidaysburg Rail Car Storage Yard"; and (C), the soon-to-be-demolished (green) Yardmaster's Office. Bald Hill still dominates the distance, however, seemingly oblivious to the passing of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal, the PRR, the Penn Central, Conrail, and Norfolk Southern.

Ruck and James Dodson. Mr. Ruck was the overall Superintendent of the Altoona Car Shops in 1962, while Mr. Dodson was a Gang Foreman at SRS. They are standing next to a newly-built hopper car during an "Open House" at SRS.

Shown here on the far right is Mr. Robert H. Stuart (02 November 1906-15 April 1976), who worked in SRS as a "Materiel Expediter." On his last day of work before retiring with more than 25 years of faithful service with both the PRR and PC, he is training his replacement (whose name is not recorded).
